چکیده

Abstract. We review and compare different computational variational methods applied to a system of fourth order equations that arises as a model of cylinder buckling. We describe both the discretization and implementation, in particular how to deal with a 1 dimensional null space. We show that we can construct many different solutions from a complex energy surface. We examine numerically convergence in the spatial discretization and in the domain size. Finally we give a physical interpretation of some of the solutions found.

-A long circular cylinder with radius R and thickness t transmits a longitudinal eccentrically applied force to a rigid half-space. We study the influence of the eccentricity of the load and the ratio R/t on the stress state of the cylinder using the theory of thin shells in bending. The elastic displacements are presented in the form of a Fourier expansion, the coefficients of which are found ...

Variational Principles for Buckling of Microtubules Modeled as Nonlocal Orthotropic Shells

A variational principle for microtubules subject to a buckling load is derived by semi-inverse method. The microtubule is modeled as an orthotropic shell with the constitutive equations based on nonlocal elastic theory and the effect of filament network taken into account as an elastic surrounding. Microtubules can carry large compressive forces by virtue of the mechanical coupling between the ...

Cylinder Buckling: The Mountain Pass as an Organizing Center

We revisit the classical problem of the buckling of a long thin axially compressed cylindrical shell. By examining the energy landscape of the perfect cylinder, we deduce an estimate of the sensitivity of the shell to imperfections. Key to obtaining this estimate is the existence of a mountain pass point for the system. We prove the existence on bounded domains of such solutions for almost all ...

A variational approach to the problem of oscillations of an elastic half cylinder

This paper is devoted to the spectral theory (more precisely, tothe variational theory of the spectrum) of guided waves in anelastic half cylinder.  We use variational methods to investigateseveral aspects of propagating waves, including localization (seeFigure 1), existence criteria and the formulas to find them. Weapproach the problem using two complementary methods: Thevariational methods fo...

Study on buckling of steel cylindrical shells with an elliptical cutout under combined loading

In this paper, simulation and analysis of thin steel cylindrical shells with elliptical cutouts under oblique loading were studied using finite element method. First, the numerical results were validated by the results of experimental test performed by an INSTRON 8802 servo hydraulic machine. Also, the effect of cutout angle (θ), cutout size, cutout position (L0/L) and cutout aspect ratios (b/a...
